Many patients resist cholesterol treatment and a frequent question is “How long do I have to take these medicines?” I used to say, “Until Willard Scott reads your name on the Today show” because Willard was the weatherman who would read the names and show the pictures of people reaching their 100 birthday on that day. But Willard has passed on so that phrase is out-of-date. But the truth is that much shorter periods of treatment produce beneficial results even after the treatment has been stopped. This is called “The Legacy Effect”. I use this phrase, and my arms, to demonstrate the principles of this effect to patients. Watch this short video to see my approach.
